A real "lightsaber" on sale for $200

With recent advances in lasers, many have fantasized about creating "real life lightsabers".  Many military commanders have fantasized about creating portable blasters along the lines of those portrayed in fictional workers like Star Trek and Star Wars.  The Spyder III Pro Arctic laser from WickedLasers can be seen perhaps as the culmination of those efforts and perhaps the first consumer laser weapon.

A handheld laser likened to a Star Wars lightsaber, and so powerful that it can instantly blind and "set fire to skin and other body parts" & now can be bought readily (also, inexpensively) online. The device with a beam 1,000 times stronger than sunlight on the skin is touted by makers as "the most dangerous laser ever created." And Wicked Lasers' Spyder III Pro Arctic lasers cost less than $200.

Star Wars fans are among hundreds of people who have already shown an interest in buying the laser, for sale to the general public.

Wicked Lasers radically redefines the way we see lasers yet again. For the first time in history, direct blue laser diodes have now become available in the consumer market. The laser powered home theater projector is the first of a large family of audio and video media technology to feature direct blue diodes. Wicked Lasers took the direct blue laser diode components and made the world’s first 445nm direct blue diode laser, the Arctic.

The Artic emits a 445nm cool blue, ultra high power 1W beam which appears up to 4000% brighter than the Sonar’s 405nm violet beam. This direct blue laser diode is the result of the evolution of laser technology. Less than one year ago, this laser would have cost thousands of dollars to build. Don’t let the Arctic name fool you, this laser possesses the most burning capabilities of any portable laser in existence. That’s why it’s also the most dangerous laser ever created.

Trading standards chiefs in England said they were "seriously concerned" about the sale of the model in the country, and have warned against its use. As well as blinding, burning and causing cancer, its Hong Kong-based maker admits that "a split-second laser light in a plane cockpit can be disastrous."

Warning: Extremely dangerous is an understatement to 1W of laser power. At close range, this Class 4 beam will cause immediate and irreversable retinal damage. Use with extreme caution and use only when wearing proper safety goggles with an O.D. of 3+ is required and 4.4+ for longer exposures. Customers will be required to completely read and agree to our Class 4 Laser Hazard Acknowledgment Form.

It goes without saying that this product is not safe for children. Check out the promotional video if you need some more pointers on what this laser can be used for!

Laser safety expert John Colton, director of Lucid Optical Services, said that the lasers were "horrendously dangerous." "Under no circumstances should they be on sale on the Internet," he said. Colton said the 1W beam was 1,000 times stronger than laser pointers normally available to the public.

They could be "deadly" if aimed at car drivers or even pilots in planes, he added. Wicked Lasers said the device would have cost thousands to build not long ago, but technological advances have made it available much more cheaply.
