ANA x GUNDAM: anime jets soaring over Japan

The Japanese air carrier All Nippon Airways (ANA) and the Japanese entertainment conglomerate Bandai have announced  their "ANA x Gundam  Jet Project". All Nippon Airways Co. will fly an aircraft bearing images of anime combat robot Gundam on domestic routes from July to mark the 30th anniversary of the release of the first Mobile Suit Gundam plastic model kit with a Boeing 777-300 jumbo jet.


The ANA x Gundam Jet will embark on its first flight from Tokyo's Haneda Airport to Osaka's Itami Airport on July 16, and ANA will hold a commissioning ceremony for the jet on that day. Passengers on the first flight will receive a (tentatively named) "original passenger certificate" as a gift. The jet will stay in service until the end of March next year, and will fly to other cities such as Fukuoka and Sapporo.


As you see, the jet decorated with the iconic Gundam robot head on the left side and a "life-size" image of the RX-78-2 Gundam mobile suit on the right side. The life-size image will depict the Gundam "lying" on its back, as if it was being stowed aboard the White Base mobile suit carrier ship from the first Gundam anime series.

ANA is hoping the harness anime fans as potential customers. The new plane design is part of the ANA Gundam Sky Project  campaign that also sees Gundam scale figures featuring ANA logos being sold only to passengers. The plane is only scheduled to be flying until March 2011 so aficionado had better get their tickets fast!

People who fly a domestic ANA flight from July 1 to August 31 can buy an ANA original color version of the High Grade 1/144 Gundam G30th plastic model kit. People who fly any ANA flight from July 1, 2010 to February 28, 2011 can buy an ANA original color version of the 1/48 Mega-Size Model Gundam.
